Studio & Class Etiquette

Attendance

We exercise the consistent practice of dance class & performance etiquette.

  • Students must arrive 10-15 minutes before their class commence to allow time to use the bathroom, dress, remove jewelry, and NEATLY put hair up. THIS SHOULD NEVER CAUSE CLASS INTERRUPTIONS!!!

  • All students must be READY TO DANCE at the start of each class. Late students may only enter with permission from the director/teacher and may be asked to sit and observe class. They must also stretch/warmup before actively taking class with their peers. It is important to be on time.

  • Students who miss classes may have a diminished role in performances.

  • Students that are no call no show contenders will be considered dropped and the spot will open up to another student.

Dress Code

In the Key of Dance has a strict uniform policy regarding dancewear. All students must be properly dressed, neat, and clean at all times. Teachers must be able to correct posture and minimize injury. If they arrive improperly dressed, or don't arrive with the correct shoes, they will not be permitted to take class. SAFETY FIRST!!!!  No exceptions! To not miss classes happenings, they will be marked present and required to sit and take notes. NO leg warmers, no sweatpants, shorts (unless authorized), head coverings (unless for religious reasons), multi-colored leotards, or jackets allowed. **GUM CHEWING IS NOT ALLOWED**

Students (no matter of age or size) must not walk around in public (outside of the studio/theater) dressed only in leotards and tights! Students in ALL levels are to enter and leave the building in a complete cover-up: dress, jeans, tee-shirt, shorts, and street shoes (not dance shoes).

  • Hair: Hair must be neat and pulled back from FACE & NECK for all classes. Braids are not preferred but okay as long as it can fit in a SECURED bun. Beads have proven to be a liability due to causes of injury to the feet as they fall on the floor and  the face of the dancer or their friends' while causing bruising and injury. If wearing beads, IT MUST BE IN A NET AND SECURED. Students will be dismissed from class until their hair is secured. Hair will not be a class distraction. Hair must also be in a SECURED high bun for all major performances. Bonnets and scarves are not permitted in class and will be removed upon arrival unless your religion requires a head covering. Male dancers should wear their hair neat as well with little to no facial hair.

  • Jewelry is dangerous while dancing, and should not be worn to class. Students are encouraged to leave all jewelry such as bracelets, watches (smart watches as well), rings, and necklaces off and preferably left at home while receiving dance instruction. In the key of Dance takes NO responsibility for any lost or stolen items (including electronics). Only stud earrings are allowed in class.

  • Nails: Clear nail polish on fingers and toes are permitted for performances, photo shoots, and productions. Nude (must match nail bed) is permitted as well. No nail designs and accessories are allowed.

  • Tights: Our studio requires all female dancers to wear skin tone transitional tights. This will prevent a break in visual line from the top of their head to their feet. Ballet shoes should be skin tone as well. Regular yellow, brown, green, or purple tights are not permitted to class. Church panty hose with and without the white bright around the thighs are not allowed for dance classes. Panties should not be worn for the all shows. Their tights are the replacements. If the dancer must wear them in class they must not be seen or it will be addressed. Panties are not allowed to break the visual line from head to toe in class or the show.

**Holes or stains on tights or leotards will not be accepted on any branding of the studio such as photos, videos, and performances, **
