Dress Code

Young dancer in a sparkly red costume striking a pose on stage.

At In the Key of Dance, we maintain a strict uniform and grooming policy to ensure a safe, distraction-free, and professional training environment. Proper attire allows instructors to correct alignment, support proper technique, and reduce risk of injury.

All students are expected to arrive properly dressed and fully prepared for class. Safety and readiness are non-negotiable.

Students who are not in proper uniform or do not have the correct shoes may be asked to sit and observe class. They will still be marked present and are expected to still learn their craft.

NOT PERMITTED IN CLASS

The following items are not allowed during class: instruction

  • Sweatpants or street shorts (unless specifically authorized)
  • Jackets or oversized outerwear
  • Multi-colored leotards (unless assigned)
  • Head coverings (unless required for religious reasons)
  • Gum chewing (strictly prohibited)

ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE EXPECTATIONS

Students must arrive and leave the studio fully covered in appropriate street clothing (e.g., dress, jeans, t-shirt, shorts with cover-up, etc.).

Students may NOT walk in public areas outside the studio or theater in leotards and tights alone.

Dance shoes must never be worn outside the studio space.

Hair Policy

Hair must always be neat, secured, and completely off the face during instruction.

  • Hair must be in a secured bun for all recital performances.
  • Braids are allowed if they can be fully secured into a bun
  • Beads are discouraged due to safety risks; if worn, they must be fully secured in a hair net
  • Bonnets and scarves are not permitted in class unless required for religious reasons
  • Male dancers must keep hair neat and appropriately groomed

For performances, all dancers must wear a secured high bun unless otherwise instructed.

Students who arrive with unsecured hair may be asked to fix it before participating in class.

JEWELRY POLICY

Jewelry is not permitted during class due to safety concerns.

  • No bracelets, rings, necklaces, or watches (including smart watches)

  • Only small stud earrings are allowed

TIGHTS & SHOES (VISUAL LINE REQUIREMENT)

To maintain proper alignment and a clean visual line, all female dancers are required to wear skin-tone transition tightsand matching ballet shoes.

  • No colored tights (yellow, green, purple, brown, etc.)
  • No standard “church pantyhose” or fashion stockings
  • Undergarments should not be visible or disrupt the line of the costume or uniform

Proper dancewear ensures consistency in training, performance quality, and studio branding.
