Step into the World of In the Key of Dance: Performance Team

Performance Team Program

The Performance Team is a year-round training and performance program designed for dancers who are committed to advancing their technique and artistry. Placement on the team requires an audition and is based on a dancer's ability to demonstrate and master specific technical skills in their core classes of ballet, tap, and jazz.

Performance Team candidates are evaluated using a defined list of age-appropriate technical standards and skills. These standards may include elements such as alignment, flexibility, turns, jumps, rhythm, coordination, musicality, and overall execution of technique. Specific skill requirements are available upon request and may vary by age and level.

In addition to technical ability, dancers may be evaluated on attendance, focus, work ethic, classroom behavior, commitment, and readiness for the additional responsibilities that come with team participation.

The goal of the Performance Team is to provide dedicated dancers with enhanced training opportunities, performance experience, and a structured environment that encourages continued growth and excellence.

What Makes Performance Team Different?

Performance Team dancers participate in a structured training program with higher expectations for attendance, commitment, preparation, and technical growth. Placement is earned through an audition process and continued dedication throughout the season.

Audition Process

Performance Team placement is determined through an audition process designed to evaluate each dancer's technical ability, performance quality, and readiness for the additional training and responsibilities associated with team membership.

During the audition, dancers may be evaluated in ballet, tap, and jazz technique, as well as musicality, coordination, flexibility, performance quality, focus, and overall presentation.

Placement is based on demonstrated skill level, technical proficiency, growth potential, work ethic, and readiness for the expectations of the program. Team placement is not determined solely by age or years of experience.

Following auditions, dancers will be notified of their placement and any recommended classes. All placement decisions are made in the best interest of the dancer's development and the overall success of the team.

The goal of the audition process is to ensure that each dancer is placed in an environment where they can be appropriately challenged, supported, and successful.

Required Training

At In the Key of Dance, Ballet, Tap, and Jazz are considered the core foundations of our Performance Team Program. All team members are expected to train in and develop proficiency in these three disciplines, as they provide the technical, rhythmic, and performance skills necessary for continued growth and advancement.

Performance Team dancers are required to:

  • Maintain enrollment in Ballet, Tap, and Jazz
  • Attend classes and rehearsals regularly
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn
  • Apply corrections and work toward mastering age-appropriate technical skills
  • Represent In the Key of Dance with professionalism, respect, and integrity

The Performance Team is intended for dancers who are committed to excellence, growth, and the discipline required to become strong, versatile performers.

Attendance Expectations

*Performance Team is not a drop-in activity. It is a commitment to consistent training. personal growth, and success of the entire team"

Performance Team membership is a commitment to both individual growth and team success. Consistent attendance is essential, as dancers build upon skills learned each week and contribute to group choreography, formations, and overall team progress.

Because Performance Team dancers participate in a structured training program, regular attendance at classes, rehearsals, performances, and team events is expected. Frequent absences may impact a dancer's technical development, performance opportunities, casting, formations, and overall team readiness.

Families are encouraged to carefully consider their schedules before accepting a Performance Team placement. By joining the team, dancers and parents are committing to the time, effort, and responsibility required to support both individual achievement and the success of the group.

We understand that illness, family emergencies, and unavoidable conflicts may occur.

Performance Opportunities

Performance Team dancers may be invited to participate in community events, festivals, parades, studio productions, showcases, outreach events, and other special performance opportunities throughout the season.

An excused absence is any absence due to unavoidable circumstances such as illness, medical appointments, family emergencies, or situations beyond the family’s control.

Unexcused absences include missed classes, rehearsals, or performances without prior communication, non-emergency scheduling conflicts, or avoidable absences that are not communicated in a reasonable timeframe.

While we understand that scheduling conflicts may arise, consistent attendance is essential for the progress of both the individual dancer and the team as a whole. Unexcused absences will affect performance opportunities, and placement within the program.

Performance Team membership is based on consistent commitment, professionalism, and respect for the studio environment. While we are committed to supporting dancer growth, certain behaviors may result in dismissal from the program.

These may include, but are not limited to, repeated absences, failure to meet technical or participation expectations, disruptive or inappropriate behavior, unsafe conduct, or failure to follow studio policies.

Dismissal may also occur in situations where a dancer’s actions negatively impact team cohesion, including repeated conflict with peers, disruption of a positive learning environment, spreading or escalating interpersonal disagreements within the studio setting, or behavior that undermines respect, unity, and the culture of the team.

All decisions are made in the best interest of maintaining a focused, respectful, and supportive training environment for all dancers.
